Biography of tenor Georges Gautier
Georges Gautier started his career at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence singing Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro and immediately after joined the Opera Studio, where he is engaged for the part of Tamino in the staging made by Louis Erlo.
He becomes member of the Opera Company in Lyon, then 1980 member of the Paris Opera Company, where he was particularly acclaimed for his incredible performance as Dardanus by Rameau.
After his triumph as Ouf 1er in L’Etoile by Chabrier (recorded by Erato under the baton of John-Elliott Gardiner), he is considered as one of the best tenor «de caractère», though he creates the part of Frère Massée in Saint François d’Assise by Messiaen at the Paris Opera under Seiji Ozawa, as well as Noces de Sang by Charles Chaynes (Montpellier 1988).
In 1985 and 1986 he goes back to Aix-en-Provence for Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos) and in 1989 he sings and records (for Virgin Classics) Truffaldino in The Love of the Three Oranges with Kent Nagano. This recording got a Grammy awards.
He sings also Eugen Oneguin (Monsieur Triquet) and Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Liceo in Barcelona and has recorded the four tenor parts in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Jeffrey Tate (for Philips).
He also recorded (for Decca) L’Enfant et les Sortilèges with Charles Dutoit and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
Singing Les Troyens he also opened the Bastille Opera, where he regularly returns (Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Carmen, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Les Brigands, Nabucco, Salomé, Eugen Oneguin, Le Nozze di Figaro, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges). He was also called by the Châtelet for Hänsel und Gretel, Nantes for Don Quichotte and Jenufa. He performed also Manon in Düsseldorf, Saint François d’Assise in Cologne, L’Homme de la Mancha at the Opéra de Wallonie, L’Amour des trois Oranges in Lyon, Ravenna, and San Francisco Adriana Lecouvreur in Amterdam, Carmen in the Arena di Verona, and was also invited by the Saito Kinen Festival for Dialogues des Carmélites under Seiji Osawa, in Brussels for L’Homme de la Mancha, in Hambourg for Les Contes d’Hoffmann, in Avignon for Dialogues des Carmélites.
He also performed L’Heure Espagnole with the L.S.O. (conducted by André Prévin), this work being recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon label.
He was also called for Werther in Amsterdam, Le Nozze di Figaro and Dialogues des Carmélites at the Opera Garnier, L’Amico Fritz in Strasbourg, Manon in Bilbao, Le Nozze di Figaro in Liège , Carmen and L’Atlantide (by Henri Tomasi) in Marseille, Carmen in Naples and Reykjavik, Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Trieste (Daniel Oren conducting), Le Nozze di Figaro in Antibes, Turandot in Strasbourg, Ariadne auf Naxos in Marseille, as well as the part of Ouf 1er in the co-production of l’Etoile by Chabrier in Tours and Rennes, Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carmen under Georges Prêtre with the Orchestra of the Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Among highlights of the last season, Quint in The Turn of the Screw and Maître Subtil in Fortunio by Messager in Rennes, Limoges and Saint Etienne.
