Biography of baritone Jean-Luc Chaignaud

After studying with Régine Crespin and Gabriel Bacquier at the “Conservatoire de Paris”, Jean-Luc Chaignaud entered the “Ecole d’Art Lyrique” of the Paris Opera. Masterclasses with Christa Ludwig and Hans Hotter provided him solid basis for his future artistic development.

1998 begins his international career with ‘La Marche de Radetsky’ by French composer René Koering, and Belcore/L’Elisir d’amore at the Mai Musical de Bordeaux.

Together with mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig  he performed  in recital at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Ossiaschersee Festival  in Austria.

1989 he records for the Deutsche Gramophon the role of Silvano in “Ballo in Maschera” with the Wiener Philharmoniker  under the direction of Herbert von Karajan and was called to sing this part at the Salzburg Festival in 1989 and 1990 under Sir Georg Solti.

1991, he becomes member of the Vienna State Opera, where he performs the leading roles of his repertory : Marcello/Bohème, Belcore/Elisir d’Amore, Almaviva/Le Nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte, Don Giovanni title role, Escamillo/Carmen, Fedora, Manon, Figaro/Il Barbierei di Siviglia, Madama Butterfly  etc…

1992, he makes his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Hamburg State Opera in “Le Nozze di Figaro” and at the Bregenz Festival singing Escamillo. He sang the role of Belcore/l’Elisir d’Amore at the Wiener Staatsoper alongside Luciano Pavarotti and in 1993, he debuted at La Scala in Milano singing Ford/Falstaff under the baton of Riccardo Muti. He will be called to sing this part again at the Wiener Staatsoper under Seiji Ozawa, as well as the role of Yeletsky in Pique Dame.

His international career leads him to the major opera houses, notably in Vienna, Berlin,Munich, Hamburg, Bonn, Köln, Dresden, Festival Schleswig Holstein (under Christoph Eschenbach), Paris (Théâtre du Châtelet under Pierre Boulez), Paris Opera Bastille, Festival d’Aix en Provence, Covent Garden,  La Fenice, Firenze (under Giuseppe Sinopoli), Liceo de Barcelona (under Bertrnad de Billy), Grand Théâtre de Genève, Tel Aviv, Houston etc…

2000, he makes his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a series of performances of La Bohème (Marcello); He will return in 2005/2006 and performs Escamillo under the direction of Philippe Jordan and for the broadcast of Massenet’s Manon (Part of Lescaut) with Renée Fleming singing the title role.

The Opera de Paris Bastille attached his collaboration first in 1990, singing the part of Chorèbe in  “Les Troyens” by Berlioz under the direction of Myung Whun Chung; he will be regularly invited to perform in this house  : Lescaut/Manon Lescaut   under Antonio Pappano, Marcello/La Bohème, Escamillo/Carmen, Lescaut/Manon, Michonnet/Adrienne Lecouvreur alongside Mirella Freni etc...

His most recent appearances include Escamillo/Carmen in Oslo, Mephisto/Damnaion de Faust in Estonia, Bartolo/Barbiere di Siviglia at the Opera de Nice, Le Conte/Le Nozze di Figaro in Lausanne, Sharpless/Madama Butterfly at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Germont/Traviata at the Megaron in Athens, Belcore/Elisir d’Amore and Hamlet title role at the Liceo in Barcelona, Garibaldi in Sicily at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under the baton of the composer Marcello Panni, Arabella at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Valentin/Faust in Bilbao in concert version, Mephistophele in La Damnation de Faust in Göteborg, Bilbao, Tallin and in tour with the Orchestre de Bretagne, Elias by Mendelssohn in Tours etc…

Parallel to his career as an opera and concert performer, Jean-Luc Chaignaud gives masterclasses in various European cities including Oslo, Geneva, Copenhagen, Paris, but also in China.
